Cloud of doom

From: MaryEllen Elia
Subject: Superintendent's Update on Budget Cuts

We had a School Board workshop today to discuss budget cuts.  I want to update everyone on what was discussed.

First, a caveat.  The state budget is still unfinished.  We don’t have a complete financial picture, but what we have seen doesn’t look good.

Given that caveat, at this time we plan to cut roughly $5.3-million in salaried positions at the district level, as well as $10-million in non-salary cuts.  None of these cuts will come from school sites. Specific district position changes will occur over the next two months.  We will not discuss those cuts specifically until we have talked with the people affected.

There are a number of non-salary items that will be cut.  They include a 20 percent reduction in divisional budgets, which will save $3,014,436.  The total district divisional cuts of salary and non-salary items will save approximately $15,300,000.

We anticipate we will have to cut more, so these efforts will continue.  As we get more information from Tallahassee we will have a clearer picture of the 2008-2009 budget.

This is a difficult process and I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.  If you have any cost-cutting ideas or concerns please send them to me.  Starting tomorrow morning (Friday), go to the district homepage and look under “Important Links.”  Click on “Budget Saving Ideas”  and tell us what you think.

 Thank you,
